What was in news last week in the World of Hydroinformatics ?

..."the global water crisis will put half the world’s food production at risk of failure within the next 25 years". A report from the Global Commission on the Economics of Water warns that over half the world's food production will be at risk of failure within 25 years due to a rapidly accelerating water crisis. The report found that demand for fresh water will outstrip supply by 40% by the end of the decade due to unprecedented stress on the world's water systems. The report also found that governments and experts underestimate the amount of water needed for people to have decent lives, with most regions relying on trade for food, clothing, and consumer goods. Peatlands can store more carbon than all the forest of the World

Most people attribute rainforests as the biggest natural carbon sink. But there’s another equally important, often overlooked type of natural carbon sink which is known as peatlands. “Peatland is a terrestrial wetland ecosystem in which the production of organic matter exceeds its decomposition and a net accumulation of peat results.”..Click here to read more about Peatland. These peatlands can conserve biodiversity, purify water and reduce flooding and soil erosion, good for planting certain crops, such as potatoes and carrots. During the mapping of global peatlands, it can be found that there is more data for the northern hemisphere compared to the southern hemisphere and the tropics. High-quality peatland extent data are only available for a small selection of countries and regions, including Canada, Sweden, and West Siberia. Waste water can detect future epidemic

“Researchers analysing wastewater say that routine monitoring at sewage treatment works could provide a powerful early warning system for the next flu or norovirus epidemic, alerting hospitals to prepare and providing public health agencies with vital health information.”.. Science Daily . Scientists at the University of Bath, Bangor University, and the UK Heath Security Agency analyzed wastewater from 10 cities for both chemical and biological markers of health, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and disease-causing viruses. How to use the knowledge of hydroinformatics in opening a start up ?

Hydroinformatics based StartUps Hydroinformatics is a branch of informatics that concentrates on the application of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in addressing the increasingly serious problems of the equitable and efficient use of water for many different purposes. Here is a list of the startups which use the knowledge and techniques of hydro informatics to solve real-life problems related to the management of water resources. Before the list let us introduce the concept of Start-Up : "A startup is a young company founded by one or more entrepreneurs to develop a unique product or service and bring it to market. By its nature, the typical startup tends to be a shoestring operation, with initial funding from the founders or their friends and families." There are various water-based Start-Ups that use the concept of hydro informatics,i.e., real-time monitoring(RTM), data analysis, Artificial Intelligence( AI) and Machine Learning(ML), and Internet...

Permeable Pavement

A video about permeable pavements. A pavement which is partially pervious and allows rain water to infiltrate through the walkways. This type of arrangements reduces the volume of runoff and recharges ground water. The sidewalks are designed in such a manner that water can flow through its edges. The flexibility in the blocks, avoid cracks due to the stress developed at the time when liquid water transforms into ice. In this days of water crisis, governments all over the world, specially in the developing countries, must implement or form a policy for installation of such type of permeable pavement to conserve water for efficient management of water resources. Indigenous method of Drip Irrigation devised by a farmer in Madhya Pradesh

The installation of drip irrigation system cost around Rs 1.25 lakh per hectare. The cost for maintenance is also high. This type of system incurs water to the crop in drip manner so that soil moisture can be kept at optimum level most of the time. A farmer in Madhya Pradesh has reduced the cost of drip irrigation to about Rs.2500 by using saline bottles as droppers,a storage tank to store water and some plastic pipes for bringing the water to the dripper. Such innovative applications of waste materials can save money as well as reduce the necessity of disposal which is now a big issue in the western world. Read the full news for more detail .

Miami "King Tides" are a regular phenomenna now

King tides which was a irregular phenomena in Miami is now seems to be a regular one.The experts are blaming the climate change for this. But a phenomenna like this which  is caused by gravitational force without the assistance of rainfall. How climate change can effect that ??? One reason can be attributed to the increased frequency of storms and rainfall;rise in sea level which is influenced by the climate change can add to the tidal flow. The erosion in the river banks and the sedimentation that may have reduced the depth of the water canals  can also attributed for this frequent king tides not only in Miami but also in the other places of the World. But still blaming only the change in climate for king tides is not justified. Read the news
