In 1923, one of the earliest recorded floods in Lucknow, India, occurred. This year is the centenary year of that event.  Heavy monsoon season rainfall caused the Gomti River to overflow its banks, causing the flood.  The flood wreaked havoc on the city's old city, civil lines, and cantonment areas. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, major floods occur in India more than once every five years.  Every year, floods affect 75 lakh hectares of land and kill 1,600 people.  With 11,316 fatalities, 1977 saw the greatest number of flood-related deaths. The Ganga River had the highest flood in 1954, measuring 72,900 m J s“’ whereas the Yamuna River reached a height of 208.57 meters in 2023, the highest ever recorded.
