Eight most common impurities observed in water supplied to domestic households

The water supplied to domestic households has many types of contaminants which have the potential to create health irregularities in the consumer family. Among these contaminants, eight most common impurities were identified, and the type of filter which can remove or reduce them was delineated in the figure. Before procuring a water filter remember to see this chart. It will help to understand the impurities that the selected water filter can remove. Any water filters available in the market are generally made of one or more of these filters. To decide wisely use the concepts of MCDM to select your filters. Compare the filters available in the market with respect to Cost, Contaminant Removal Efficiency, Maintenance requirement, and type of filters used and rate each filter based on these factors with the help of AHP or ANP techniques. The result will be the filter that will be most efficient for your use. You can also use the ODM tool to come to a decision regarding the procurement o...

Six types of filters mostly used in purifying water for city dwellers: Issue 1 of HydroGeek Newsletters

HydroGeek Vol 1 Issue 1 Filters are used to purify or convert raw untreated water into drinkable or pure water which can be safely consumed by a human being. After purification, this water has to adhere to the standards proposed by a regulating authority responsible for the said purpose. Every country has its own standards. Generally, different types of filters are used to remove or neutralize five major types of impurities observed in water:  Total and faecal coliform, Biological Oxygen Demand, Hardness, Heavy Metals and Turbidity to achieve those standards. In addition to this, there are other impurities also but if a filter can reduce or neutralize the above five impurities then the filter is allowed to be used as a self-sustainable unit for producing drinking water. The first edition of HydroGeek tries to highlight the role of water filters in creating "sustainable and healthy human life", with the following content : Content 1) Six types of filters mostly  used in pu...

How to use the knowledge of hydroinformatics in opening a start up ?

Hydroinformatics based StartUps Hydroinformatics is a branch of informatics that concentrates on the application of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in addressing the increasingly serious problems of the equitable and efficient use of water for many different purposes. Here is a list of the startups which use the knowledge and techniques of hydro informatics to solve real-life problems related to the management of water resources. Before the list let us introduce the concept of Start-Up : "A startup is a young company founded by one or more entrepreneurs to develop a unique product or service and bring it to market. By its nature, the typical startup tends to be a shoestring operation, with initial funding from the founders or their friends and families." There are various water-based Start-Ups that use the concept of hydro informatics,i.e., real-time monitoring(RTM), data analysis, Artificial Intelligence( AI) and Machine Learning(ML), and Internet...

Top Three Places to look for openings in hydrology

Top three places to find hydrology jobs Hydrology is a contemporary and dynamic topic of research. This area of research is always expanding its scope and from the days of measuring discharge to the application of GIS in monitoring and regulating the flow for better management of the resource, this area of research has endured a lot of developments. The very interdisciplinary nature of this topic makes it more interesting and attractive to any young researcher who has a desire to innovate and the agility to implement his/her innovation. In recent years due to the change in climate and global ecosystem, water is becoming scarce and competition to consume the same has been stupendous. That is why the management of this resource that also in an optimal manner is a need of the hour which requires a regular flow of learned person who has been trained to work in the challenging field of hydrology. As a consequence, this field requires manpower which is evident in the burgeoning demand for hy...

Three number of ideas on which PG Projects can be accomplished

The summer season can be utilized by the pursue of research on the following few ideas. The ideas are developed based on the type of audience that means whether  B.Tech. or M.Tech, Students or Teachers, etc. students will enjoy doing these topics to complete their PG or UG requirement. Title: Short Term Rainfall forecasting by ANN-MCDM Approach Pre-requisite : Various data of climatic parameters, land use pattern of the region, cloud type and density for 1 to 5 days before the day of forecast. Justification of the Study : Rainfall can impact the output of many industrial and agricultural processes. Even the energy output from the power sector is affected by the climatic parameter. Short term rainfall forecasting is an important concept as it can help the planners of this industry to adjust their input so that the required output will remain unaffected. Brief Methodology : A widescale expert and local survey followed by a literature review have to be conducted to identify the p...

M.Tech in Hydro-Informatics Engineering

Hydroinformatics? National Institute of Technology Agartala(Tripura) is offering 2 years course on M.Tech in Hydro-Informatics Engineering. Graduates from Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and MSc students of Environment Engineering, GIS are eligible to apply. If you have a valid GATE score, you can enrol through the Spot Round counselling which will be held online by the CCMT. The course is nine years old and the passed out students are either doing PhD in a reputed institute like IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Ropar etc.or have been appointed as Assistant Professor in different colleges like University of Engineering and Management(Kol), Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology(Kol) etc. Few students have also cracked the campus interview to join in L&T, Infosys etc. But according to the course coordinator, the School of Hydro-Informatics Engg., which is conducting the course, wants a student who is interested in doing research in interdisciplinary topics. As for...

Five empirical models, for prediction of peak discharge and estimation of flood

"A flood is an overflow of water on normally dry ground". This is most commonly due to an overflowing river, a dam break, snow-melt, or heavy rainfall. Tsunamis, storm surge, or coastal flooding are some of the examples of common flooding whereas instances of extreme flooding includes the flood  in 1931 at China which killed between 2,000,000 and 4,000,000 people. In 2002, Texas flood which was caused by a reservoir overflow. In just three days, the floodwaters carved canyons measuring 1.4 mile (2.2 kilometres) long and  20-foot-(6 meters)-deep. Floods can be measured for height, peak discharge, area inundated, and volume of flow. Due to the ability of this extreme event to cause disasters, it is important to predict the event well in advance or at the time of designing flood control structures.Flood is a result of a discharge;generally peak discharge;which the drainage network can not hold and eventually overflows and causes inundation.  There are various methods to estim...
